FILL OUR EMPTY BOWLS - Jan. 14, 2009
At the Café Protégé in West Palm Beach, savory culinary delights were prepared by the Florida Culinary Institute and their chefs as part of a benefit for the homeless. Palm Beach County Commissioners were the invited “Celebrity Chef Assistants”. The County Commissioners joined in the fun and wore chef hats and aprons as guests were served an inspirational five course sampling. Each of the five courses were named to signify aspects of homelessness…a plight all too prevalent in our community. First course – awareness; Second course – support; Third course – courage and strength; Fourth course – solutions; and Fifth course – kindness and compassion.
Local artists created and decorated ceramic bowls as a reminder that there are many empty bowls in our community yet to be filled. Joanie Van der Grift, a local photographer and journalist unveiled a documentary about the homeless in Palm Beach County, titled “Never Give Up”. The “Faces of Homelessness” Story Tellers shared their homeless experiences with everyone. Launched in 2008; the Story Tellers is one of The Homeless Coalition’s most visible public education and advocacy tools. Robert Egger, Founder of the DC Central Kitchen, in Washington, DC spoke about his groundbreaking organization and its successful solution in redistributing food for the homeless.
Nearly 150 community residents and leaders attended the event. Suzanne Boyd from Channel 12 was the guest host for the event.
The Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, Inc. begins its 20th year as the “voice” of the homeless.
